p.r.n.

“As the circumstances require” (p.r.n.) is a prescriptive phrase used by physicians to indicate that Rx (a remedy, cure or solution for a disorder or problem) may be administered according to the judgement of the caregiver or patient. Note here that the physician is not conveying, “do whatever you want, whenever you want,” she is saying, “if the specific problem occurs, administer this specific recipe.” Medical staffing is also provided p.r.n. as a solution to short-handedness.

HIPAA

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 set standards for patient privacy while still enabling necessary medical records to follow the patient through their course of treatment. It sort of keeps private information private on a “need to know” basis.

Engineering Support

We did quite a bit of engineering support last year on a “p.r.n.” basis. We can’t really talk about what we did, because of client confidentiality, but we still want to make it known that we’re available —It is satisfying and fun to come alongside on a project that needs a solution to a problem. So what types of “prescriptions”  might we fill…?
